However, we have alternatives. Strategic foresight is a powerful tool that helps us look beyond the current situation to what might follow, and figure out how we can prepare for it.
We share some strategies for taking action.
1. Accept uncertainty as the norm. While planning is critical, you should not rely on having everything “under control”. Accepting this premise allows you to contemplate a range of possible scenarios and prepare yourself.
2. Define the priority. What do you need to ensure first? This is a critical step if you find your work or project at risk. For example, due to the current economic situation, you can focus only on achieving economic stability over the next few months.
3. Consider what future you might face. Develop specific scenarios to explore the future world you envision. Evaluate what your tools have not and analyze how they would adapt to current trends, new business models, technologies or new jobs that may appear.
4. Identify the outcome. Once you have your scenarios, answer these questions: What opportunities may come up? What risks would you face in each of them? Which of your strengths and weaknesses do these scenarios highlight? What new questions arise?
5. Explain each scenario by analyzing its effectiveness. Everything you analyze should be written down. Classify your assumptions into three categories: those that are feasible and should guide your plans; those that should be further researched; and those that are unlikely to happen.
6. Review your options and decisions. Start designing your action plan. What will you do when you reach an alternative future? What skills can you build? What small investments can you make today so that you do not have to come up with solutions when you find yourself in a world that is very different from today?
7. Monitor your plan. Create a system to monitor the progress of your scenarios through signal recognition. Which future is really happening? This will allow you to adapt your course of action as soon as possible, and look for the best options.
8. Acknowledge the emotional journey. Starting to plan for the future can be emotionally uncomfortable. However, strengthening your strategic foresight practice will allow you to be more “future-fit”.
9. Action! Put your plan into action. Strategic foresight is there to enable you to make better decisions and reflect on the future in an action-oriented way.
Finally, be brave! You probably know the phrase “Crisis is opportunity”. Consider all possible scenarios, even those that scare you, and have the courage to move forward.
