Reactive vs. Strategic Security
Facing a new world that has evolved 10 years in terms of digitalization, it is natural that many companies have been taken by surprise and are working hard on their flexibility and adaptation to the new global rules.
This has a direct impact on regulation and decision making in terms of security: the greater the progress in digitization, the greater the vulnerability to malicious attacks, human error and system errors.
Therefore, it is urgent to ask yourself, what position are you taking regarding your company’s security? How much control do you have over who has access to your key information and what they do with it? In this scenario, HWSI has identified two predominant approaches: Reactive Security and Strategic Security.
Let’s get to know the characteristics of both:
Reactive Security

In this cycle, the company acts once the attack has happened. A specialized team responds, identifies the threat, the company acquires a new security monitoring tool and the risk is mitigated. Activities resume and business continues.
In the best case scenario, this can be resolved in a day or two and, depending on the expertise of the attackers, the data may not be completely lost.
However, this solution is applied every time a system is breached and is repeated as many times as necessary.
Consequently, the exposure to risk is constant and the investment of time and money can increase in proportion to the severity of the cyber-crime.

Strategic Security

In this approach, companies act before an attack occurs. To do so, they rely on a specialized team for the development of an Information Security Program that provides a framework for their actions in a preventive and planned manner.

This Program consists of the following stages:
1- Setting of security objectives.
2- Evaluation of the current security situation in the organization.
3- Development of a plan for the achievement of objectives.
4- Execution of the plan.
5- Preparation of a progress report of the plan.
6- Identification of new risks and readjustment of the plan if necessary.

Unlike the first approach, taking the strategic path gives the organization the power to have greater control over its company’s most important asset: its information.
Thus, Strategic Security is more effective because in the diagnostic phase it performs an exhaustive risk analysis and detects which information is the most important to protect from attacks, whether they come from internal or external sources.
In addition, monitoring the progress of the plan allows it to be updated according to the dynamics of the organization and is not bound to standardized solutions that may not be as effective for most organizations.

Our approach

At HWSI we guide companies from a strategic approach of their security because we believe that security attacks should not be taken as isolated or occasional events.
Every day we see in the news how strong systems of solid companies and governmental organizations are victims of attacks due to the lack of awareness and seriousness about a situation that worsens every day.
If you believe that your organization needs to strengthen its security strategy, remember that at HSWI we can guide you to create secure environments and protect your company.
